Years of public service
Rusty has spent more than a decade in the prosecutor's office and is regarded as a capable trial lawyer. Raymond relies on him to manage daily decisions while campaigning, and Rusty takes pride in being useful rather than overtly political.
Ambition held at a distance
He has imagined taking Raymond's place but tells himself he is not a politician. Carolyn sees that he could be a successor and urges him to make his interest known; Rusty refuses to press Raymond to step aside.
A role that becomes dangerous
When Carolyn is murdered, Raymond puts Rusty in charge of the investigation. Rusty accepts, despite his prior affair with the victim, and his professional position soon becomes the framework for suspicion against him.
The Defendant in the Dock

The Defendant in the Dock
A prosecutor's knowledge turned inward
Rusty understands how a circumstantial case is built, but that knowledge cannot spare him from seeing his own fingerprints, calls, and household fibers presented as evidence. His authority disappears as he becomes the defendant whose silence and conduct are interpreted by others.
Strain on identity
He feels shame, rage, and disbelief while worrying that Nathaniel will grow up with a father publicly branded a murderer. His professional instincts remain active, yet his ability to control his own fate has sharply diminished.
A legal reprieve
Alejandro Stern's defense exposes weaknesses in the state's case, and Judge Lyttle dismisses the charge. Rusty leaves court acquitted, but the verdict cannot restore his former public standing or settle his private knowledge.
The Caretaker's Return

The Caretaker's Return
Life after acquittal
Rusty does not return immediately to work. He stays home, receives his salary, and lives amid public congratulations and the discomfort of neighbors who still associate him with the murder case.
Choosing to remain
Raymond asks him to consider an acting appointment. Rusty accepts the prosecutor's office without promising to run for reelection, choosing a difficult local return over the uncertain hardship of starting elsewhere.
A changed public identity
He becomes a caretaker prosecutor and a local emblem of a supposedly wrongful prosecution, even as he knows the case did not uncover the truth. His professional recovery is real but incomplete: the public story and the private story remain at odds.
